Las Vegas Locos Clinch United Football League Championship Game Berth as All Teams Remain Alive

November 2, 2010 by

The reigning champion Las Vegas Locos have clinched a return to the United Football League Championship Game as a result of Week 7 UFL games played on Thursday and Saturday.

And all five UFL teams remain alive in the race for the right to face Las Vegas in the 2010 UFL Championship Game to be played on Saturday, November 27 in Omaha, NE (live on Versus, 11am CDT / 12pm EDT).

The reigning champion Locos defeated the Omaha Nighthawks 24-10 on the road on October 28 to move to 5-1 atop the standings and the brink of a return to the Championship Game. Then on Saturday night, a dramatic last second field goal by Hartford Colonials kicker Taylor Mehlhaff earned a 27-26 win over the Sacramento Mountain Lions to ensure the Locos mathematically qualified for the post season.

Only the Omaha Nighthawks or Florida Tuskers can now match the five wins recorded by Las Vegas, but because those two teams play each other twice in the remaining three weeks of the UFL season, either a sweep or a split series will mean only one and not both can challenge the Locos’ five wins, rendering potential tiebreakers irrelevant.

“The United Football League congratulates Jim Fassel and the Las Vegas Locos on reaching the UFL Championship Game for a second consecutive season,” said Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. “Consistency is the key to success in sports and the Locos epitomize that, having won ten and lost only three games in their two-season history.

“Jim Fassel and his staff have assembled an exciting team that has given the city of Las Vegas a winning professional sports franchise. I am sure football fans in Las Vegas will show their appreciation for their team’s success by giving them a great send off at the final regular season home game at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday night.”

The 2009 UFL champion Locos’ clash with the Sacramento Mountain Lions (2-4) at Sam Boyd Stadium in Week 8 kicks off at 8pm local time / 11pm EDT on Saturday, November 6.

“We are excited about being in the United Football League’s championship game for a second year,” said Coach Fassel. “This league is very equal and all these games could have gone either way. This year, games have been the tightest I’ve ever seen in any league.

“We feel very fortunate to be on top and earn our right to be in the Championship Game. We still have two games to play and I want to continue to improve our team so we’re ready to play our best in the Championship Game.”

Tiebreaker scenarios that have been suggested by fans voting at and are currently being considered by the UFL Competitions Committee will help determine which of the other four UFL teams advance to the big show.

The Omaha Nighthawks (3-2) have destiny in their own hands with three games to play and two victories needed to qualify. The Florida Tuskers (2-3) also control their own destiny, but with three wins required to guarantee setting up a repeat of the 2009 Championship Game. The Hartford Colonials (2-4) and Sacramento Mountain Lions (2-4) must seek to force a 4-4 tie for second place and also need help from the Tuskers and Nighthawks before the tiebreaker procedure comes into play.
