Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada held its annual Camp Independent Firefly at YMCA Camp Whittle in Fawnskin, California (Big Bear) Tuesday, June 12 through Friday, June 15. The annual medically-supervised, outdoor event hosted 115 children coping with cancer so that, despite their health concerns, they can participate in this childhood summertime right of passage.
Camp Independent Firefly offers critically ill children and their siblings fun-filled activities including horseback riding, high and low ropes, zip lining, rock climbing, archery, gaga ball, arts and crafts, swimming, music, yoga, obstacle courses, campfires, lip sync battles and more. Camp is a time for children affected by cancer to forget about hospitals and sickness and enjoy being children.
Children attending Camp Independent Firefly are given a cost-free camp experience thanks to donations from community leaders and philanthropic partners, individuals and other supporters.
Commemorating 40 years of service to the community in 2018, Candlelighters is Southern Nevada’s first and oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local pediatric cancer patients.
