The iconic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino – one of Las Vegas’ original hotels – will continue its storied 111-year legacy with a major expansion, which will be unveiled in late August. Merging modern design and gaming with the property’s illustrious history, the renovation will nearly double the casino in size; add a dramatic entry way on Fremont Street Experience; and extend its high-energy outdoor bar, OneBar at One Fremont Street (Pictured: Artist’s rendition of casino floor – Photo credit: Golden Gate Hotel & Casino)

“Since opening in 1906 as Hotel Nevada, Golden Gate has played a key role in the growth and success of Downtown Las Vegas,” says CEO Derek Stevens. “We are thrilled to continue Golden Gate’s incredible narrative and evolution, while also contributing to the area’s ongoing revitalization.”

The history of Las Vegas’ original casino, which opened its doors at One Fremont Street more than a century ago, spans the roaring 20s, Prohibition, Rat Pack era and now the 21st century. If its walls could talk, guests would get an earful about some of the most interesting and colorful moments in Vegas history. Golden Gate survived the Prohibition era (whiskey bottles were found hidden in the walls during the hotel’s previous renovation); and was a frequent watering hole for Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. It was home to one of Vegas’ first electric signs and the city’s first telephone. The phone number? “Ring ‘1,’ please.”

This will mark Golden Gate’s second major expansion in more than 50 years – the first being the addition of a five-story luxury hotel tower, new lobby and exterior in 2012, also helmed by Stevens.

Golden Gate’s renovation will include the following elements:

  • Game On with Expanded Casino Floor – Nearly doubling in size, the new casino space will introduce almost 100 new slots to the casino floor. The centerpiece of the space will be an eye-catching 360-degree, 24-foot tower of televisions, artfully displayed as though the TVs are emerging from a fountain. Additionally, visitors will be greeted by a multi-faceted crystal chandelier, composed of beautiful spirals cascading downward in tiers of beveled mirror accents.
  • Bottoms Up at Renovated OneBar – As a non-stop beverage destination on Fremont Street Experience, One Bar at One Fremont Street will expand 20 feet to become one of the longest bars in Downtown Las Vegas. Featuring external televisions, frozen libations and, of course, the popular flair and dancing bartenders, it is sure to quench the thirst of visitors and locals.
  • Set the Vegas Stage with New Entry Way – Evoking the essence of vintage Vegas glitz and glam, Golden Gate will introduce a completely redesigned Fremont Street façade, including glamorous velvet drapes to create an unforgettable casino entrance from Fremont Street Experience. Inspired by the Jazz Age, the drapery will be adorned with exquisite gold medallions, serving as a grand arrival to the casino’s marble-floored rotunda.

Although it’s been known to only shut its doors once before, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino will close August 20 – August 25 for a significant construction phase. The evolution of the property will contribute to the vision of Derek Stevens and his team to transform the way visitors experience Downtown Las Vegas, which will include the highly anticipated 18th Fremont St. hotel-casino project as well as the D Las Vegas and Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.
