Postcard From Morocco, by Dominick Argento

Sin City Opera kicks off their seventh season with Dominick Argento’s Postcard from Morocco, a visceral experiment in surrealist opera.  this 20th century contemporary piece is rooted in a timeless and exotic train station, where strangers and their baggage will take us on a journey of self-discovery.  SCO Artistic Director, Skip Galla, leads the cast in this thoughtful exploration of Western notions of possession and ownership, and how those ideals can shape us as individuals.  this musical masterpiece by Argento travels to a place of human reflection with honesty, care, and a universal sense of curiosity.

Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Sin City Opera presents Tchaikovsky’s tragic drama, ‘Eugene Onegin’. Based on the epic poetry of Alexander Pushkin, the story follows the life of Onegin; a world-weary, selfish, vain and indifferent hero who becomes a victim of his own pride and selfishness. Director Matthew Kirchner has reimagined this timeless story as set in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, ‘Great Gatsby’ era of 1925. Calvin Coolidge is President, it is four years before the beginning of the Great Depression and morale in America is at an all-time high. It’s a time of jazz music, flapper culture and bootleggers. Onegin’s journey is a conflict between art and life; a story of rejection, unrequited love, and the inhumanity of social convention.

Dates: February 2017 – 17th, 18th, 24th, 25th at 7:00 PM, 19th, 26th at 2:00 PM

the Star (L’Etoile) by Emmanuel Chabrier

“the fault is not in our stars,” but in Sin City Opera’s new production of Chabrier’s opera bouffe, “the Star,” the fault may well be found in the stars, or at least in an overconfident astrologer.  this exciting, new production takes place beyond space and time, in the realm of King Ouf!  It’s his birthday and he expects his usual gift, an execution!  things become complicated when the court astrologer predicts that the fate of the king is directly linked to the fate of the poor, young man who has been selected for execution.  the result is a series of comic situations and shenanigans that will keep the audience laughing to the end, while enjoying Chabrier’s brilliant musical composition.  Rebecca Morris will be directing this production for Sin City Opera, with some exciting new staging, ambitious sets and costumes to bring “the Star” into the depths of outer space!

Dates: May, 2017 – 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th at 7:00 PM, 14th, 21st at 2:00 PM
