LVMS to host memorial Jason Whitenack Shootout April 19 03-20-2008 by VegasNews Staff
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host a special motorcycle bracket-racing event on Saturday, April 19, in memory of 2003 champion Jason Whitenack, who lost his life last October in a highway accident. The event has been organized by Jason's father, Dave Whitenack, a veteran drag racer, track operator and race official. The Jason Whitenack Motorcycle Shootout will run in conjunction with that evening's Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series event.
“We want everyone to come out and have fun,” said Dave Whitenack. “Leo Shaver (many-time Strip Motorcycle champion) has helped a lot. This will be the biggest payout for Motorcycle racers. Metro Mechanical (Jason’s former employer) donated $1,000, U.S. Dental gave $500 and Fast Towing kicked in $200 toward the purse. Jason’s daughter is coming in from Ohio for this race and his son will be here too. I know he’d like that.”
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will present the motorcycle bracket winner with an additional cash bonus, a custom jacket and a special-edition trophy for the event. Jason's friends, family and local sponsors are contributing additional prizes to make the event the biggest sportsman motorcycle race on the west coast.
“Jason was a very special racer, a champion and a huge supporter of The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,” said Chris Blair, LVMS’ vice president of racing operations. "Our goal is to bring together as many motorcycle racers as possible to pay tribute to him and his family with one huge night of bracket-racing action.”
