LVMS donates more than a ton of unused food from NASCAR Weekend
03-05-2008 by VegasNews Staff

On Monday Las Vegas Motor Speedway, along with food and beverage partner Levy Restaurants, donated more than a ton of food to Three Square Food Bank in North Las Vegas.

The food, left from this past weekend’s NASCAR events, was recovered from the speedway’s suites, corporate hospitality area and concession stands.

LVMS partnered with Rock and Wrap It Up, a non-profit organization, to ensure the safe delivery of the food. Rock and Wrap It Up’s volunteers assisted speedway and Levy employees in loading and unloading the food.

“We know there are those who are less fortunate in communities all across the country, and we want to do our part to aid them here in Southern Nevada,” said Chris Powell, LVMS general manager. “Anytime you have an event the magnitude of a NASCAR race, there’s going to be left over food. It makes no sense to throw it away when it can benefit so many people in need.”

Approximately 2,200 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables were delivered to the food bank. According to Three Square CEO Julie Murray, the food will be sent to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.

“We’re so grateful for the donation. Without organizations such as Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Rock and Wrap It Up, we wouldn’t have the food necessary to feed all of the hungry people in our community,” Murray said. “We’re so happy to have the support from this race as well as a partnership for many years to come. There are so many hungry people who will benefit from this generous donation.”

Three Square was established to eradicate hunger in the valley and provides wholesome, nutritious meals to non-profit organizations that serve a wide range of Southern Nevadans in need. A national model project inspired by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Three Square is a community collaborative partnership with the gaming industry, businesses, non-profit agencies, food distributors, UNLV, Clark County School District, governmental entities, several media outlets and hundreds of volunteers.

Based in New York City, Rock and Wrap It Up’s mission is to feed the less fortunate through food recovery. With partnerships in more than 500 cities across the United States, including the NBA, Major League Baseball, NFL and NHL – along with artists such as Nickelback, Kenny Chesney and Christina Aquilera – it’s able to feed thousands of people through its food recovery efforts. Since its inception in 1994, Rock and Wrap It Up has recovered and distributed more than 25 million pounds of food.

“We’re very excited about expanding our program to work with Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Levy Restaurants,” said Rock and Wrap It Up’s founder, Syd Mandelbaum. “We currently recover concession food from more than 25 national sports franchises. Auto racing is America’s fastest-growing spectator sport and has the potential to feed millions – it takes our breath away.”
