Dat Phan at The Improv – Original Last Comic Standing Winner

The winner from NBC’s first run of ‘Last Comic Standing’, Dat Phan, is currently performing this week at The Improv at Harrah’s. I took a break from my steady comic coverage and decided to dig back in….I enjoy covering comedians and can use a bit of laughter these days.

I stopped in Wednesday night to photograph his performance and enjoyed the set so much I stuck around for the duration. Dat’s over the top impressions of his Vietnamese mother is what I knew of him from ‘Last Comic Standing’ and these bits never fail to amuse. At the core of Dat’s material I find his his take on cross cultural misunderstandings, asian stereotypes and the experience of being an asian american the real power of his comic genius and the key to his success. He makes light of subjects that don’t often get discussed about racial issues and delivers it in a way that is humorous and enlightening at the same time without ever taking it too seriously.

He maintains a slapstick delivery around real subjects about his real life experience and the difficulties/absurdities of combating stereotypes and racism. He has come along way since appearing on the hit NBC reality TV show a few years back and it was good to catch up with him and see his new act. He is currently wrapping up a Disney film project and out on the road promoting his new DVD….Dat Phan Live.
