United Way Seeks Volunteers to Help Feed the Homeless Nov. 10

October 26, 2009 by

United Way’s Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada is partnering with the Nevada Homeless Alliance to help feed and provide lifestyle assistance to thousands of homeless at Cashman Center on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Approximately 500 individuals are needed for the service-oriented event taking place from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cashman Center located on 850 Las Vegas Blvd N.

Volunteers will be able to choose from two shifts and will be assigned duties including:

  • Escort: will serve as guides in assisting clients to locate the appropriate service sections. This provides volunteers with an opportunity to provide one-to-one contact with homeless individuals and families.
  • Client check-in: will greet and provide one-to-one contact with homeless, educating them on services available. Volunteers with social work or social service background are highly desirable and training will be provided.
  • Client giveaways and check-out: will receive the client’s paperwork, fill out a brief exit form, and ensure that the client needs were met. Training for this position will be offered.
  • Pre-event set up: will assist with setting up booths, tables, chairs, signs, etc., the day before the event
  • Post-event tear down: will assist with taking down booths, tables, chairs, signs, etc., after the event
  • Maintenance: will assist with general maintenance and clean up during the event
  • General event: will provide information and help in the service areas where needed, possibly including managing giveaways, monitoring safety and event flow, helping to check client baggage, and providing back-up for other volunteers.

“This hands-on opportunity is among our most rewarding because it makes an immediate difference in someone’s life,” said Robin Kelley, director of the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada. “It takes a lot of help to put on an event of this caliber and we are dependent upon volunteers who really want to make a noticeable contribution.”
