The Stars Shine Bright in "Driving Miss Daisy" at The Smith Center
Broadway in the Hood
brings Uhry’s classic play to life at The Smith Center for The Performing Arts for a limited engagement run. Uhry’s play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America told through the complex relationship between two of pop culture’s most enduring characters (Pictured: Daisy and Hoke)

When Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in mid-century Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man to serve as her chauffeur. Throughout the play we see Miss Daisy begins to suffer from Alzheimer’s like symptoms, memory loss, impaired thinking skills, diminished judgment and language, and an increasing inability to perform the functions of daily life. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing between Daisy and Hoke, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them. Their iconic tale of pride, changing times and the transformative power of friendship have warmed the hearts of millions worldwide.

From its landmark Off-Broadway production in 1987 to the remarkable success of the Oscar-winning film version with Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman (four Academy Awards, including Best Picture), Driving Miss Daisy has become one of the most beloved American stories of the late twentieth century. When this revival opened on Broadway (with Vanessa Redgrave as Daisy Werthan), Bloomberg News declared, “The enchanting revival…is the best theater can be.” And The Wall Street Journal called Daisy “A perfect night on Broadway. Do whatever you have to do to get a ticket!”

Driving Miss Daisy is set for a limited engagement run January 15 – 17, 2016 in The Troesh Theatre at The Smith Center.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.thesmithcenter.com, by phone at 702-749-2000 or 808-326-6868 (TTY) and at the box office located at 361 Symphony Park Ave. For preferred seating and special rates for groups of 10 or more, contact 702-749-2348.
